Emerging in the early '80s with their violent, politically incorrect (yet socially correct...) sound, Swans have left an indelible mark on the underground music scene over the past three decades. Their evolution from the oppressive rhythms and noise of their initial recordings to the later monumental, apocalyptic 'pseudo-folk' ballads has never diminished their status as a formidable and culturally intricate musical force. In my view, 'The Great Annihilator' stands as their magnum opus: a flawless fusion of luminous electric aggression and enigmatic solemnity. They explore spirituality in a non-religious manner, with every note, every sound, and every word on this album speaking directly to the listener's body and mind. Gira's distinctive and enigmatic voice serves as the ideal vessel for the esoteric yet profoundly human themes of this unsettling and magnificent album, which is both delicate and powerfully violent, deeply sad and brilliantly furious. Musically, the band functions as a perfect entity, crafting a genuine collective sound. The impressive unity and cohesion among the musicians are evident even in their studio albums. Each musician is a master of their instrument, with extensive experience, yet no one indulges in self-aggrandizement. Despite their individual brilliance, there is no individualism. Naturally, this musical prowess is one of the reasons why Swans' live performances are unforgettable experiences rather than mere concerts.
This is hands-down my top pick from Swans' discography. It's their majestic and stunning work that's secured its place as a timeless piece. However, this particular copy falls a bit short. Sides 2, 3, and 4 are plagued by an incessant clicking sound, while side 1 is flawless. I can't speak to the remastering quality since I didn't compare it to the CD, but the music did sound gorgeous (albeit with that annoying click).
This is an amazing pressing! There's not a single flaw to point out....just pure admiration here..... it's great to finally hear the original noise gating / compression removed on "I Am the Sun"..this is a far superior re-mastered version of the original. 10/10
Can someone explain why this album is so incredibly hard to find?
There's a bit of surface hiss and occasional pops (likely from the record's marks), but the packaging is quite nice and the record sounds as good as I'd expect. All in all, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5.
