This lovely blue 180g pressing has been a great companion for many years! As a semi-official release, it sounds pretty good. The cover is also well-made. It's a fantastic bargain for the price!
The disc is flat, might be a tad bit louder, but it's no big deal. The audio is spread left and right. Sonically, it's a very rich and detailed sound. I'd definitely recommend this pressing.
Alright, so if you're just after a clean version of this album, this isn't the one for you. The distortion here is pretty heavy, making it kind of painful to listen to at times. It's almost like the high notes in some tracks are completely torn apart. The only upside to this is the few extra songs (which actually sound pretty decent, unlike the main tracks) and the fact that it's on colored vinyl (though I couldn't care less about that, but I know some of you guys love that stuff, lol).
This mono pressing sounds fantastic and I'd say it's right up there with some of the Blue Note Classic Series in terms of quality. I've never had the chance to listen to an original pressing, so I can't say if there are better sounding versions out there. That being said, this record isn't the freshest or most transparent sounding. I've heard that the recording of this masterpiece by John Coltrane isn't top-notch anyway. So, for me, this is absolutely a good mono pressing by Rhino.
This album delivers decent sound quality and is a budget-friendly purchase. However, keep in mind that buying it means you're supporting the debated EU/Russian labels that have exploited a gap in EU copyright laws to offer these low-cost releases. If you're a jazz enthusiast with a collection of high-quality records, you'll notice that this one doesn't quite measure up. The EQ lacks depth and the stereo separation is minimal. Coltrane's tenor sax is overly prominent and a bit harsh, the cymbals can sound distorted and unclear, and the bass, while present, lacks the warmth of a more premium pressing. That said, it's a solid pick-up if you find it on sale for a bargain price, but if you truly love this album, you'll likely want to invest in a higher quality version. 3/5 stars.
