This is a phenomenal release, both in terms of sound quality and presentation. It's probably one of the last titles in the series to be remastered by Kevin Gray. I did a comparison with an original pressing. Unlike many other Fania albums, this one wasn't recorded or cut at Sterling Sound, and you can tell. In this instance, the Craft reissue is a significant upgrade, especially in the clarity of the instruments and the retrieval of subtle details. It's safe to say this is the ultimate version of the album. The music itself is a true masterpiece. It includes the hugely popular "Periódico de Ayer" by the maestro Tite Curet Alonso, along with my personal favorites—the incredibly danceable "Hacha y Machete" and "Mentira." But honestly, every track here is top-notch. With this release, only Strikes Back and El Sabio remain unreissued in the series, and Strikes Back is already scheduled for June. Kudos to Craft for their great work.
Among Hector Lavoe's finest works for FANIA, this album stands as a true classic and an essential addition to any collection of Hector Lavoe enthusiasts or Latin music aficionados. Packed with timeless Mambo—also known as "salsa"—dance tracks, this record kicks off with standout numbers like #1, #3, #6, and #7. 'Mentira' is a groovy Cha-Cha, and the ever-popular Bolero 'De Ti Depende' is featured here as well. 'Consejo de Oro' is a standout, originally a Tango, transformed into a Bolero-Cha-Cha with a fresh Afro-Cuban twist.
This album is an almost spiritual journey to listen to. After becoming accustomed to the streaming version and the CD, which sounds like it was taken from a worn-out cassette, hearing this album sourced directly from the master tape is absolutely amazing. 5/5
