An awesome introduction to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It's not their finest album, but it's pretty darn good.
Clearly, the colors don't match what's shown, but the real issue is the pressing itself. It skips terribly on both the A and B sides. I tested two copies, and they both had the same problems. I'd steer clear of this one, for certain.
This track sounds really bad… it's way too squashed and all messed up. I reckon there was a problem when they mastered it…
I own a nm version and it performs just as good as any other in my collection. Incredible album from beginning to end. Red Hot Chili Peppers at their finest!
Having grown up with this album, and after witnessing the Red Hot Chili Peppers deliver an incredible performance in London just over a week ago with Frusciante back in the band, I found myself in a bit of a Chilli Peppers craze. I own vinyl copies of most of their albums released before Californication, but had never bought Cali on vinyl due to the appalling production quality. I purchase records because I appreciate the sound and enjoy the hi-fi experience. I never imagined that this album would sound good on vinyl, so I steered clear of it until now. And then I discovered that the esteemed Chris Bellman from the renowned Bernie Grundman studio had remastered the album, fantastic! Surely this would result in something pleasing to my ears! Did it? I regret to say, not really. It sounds different, a bit more dynamic, but if it's an improvement over the original, it's by a small margin. Mix-wise, everything still sounds super hot, slammed to the ceiling, particularly the drums which are absolutely appalling, and Anthony’s vocals are still subpar. ‘You can’t polish a turd’ comes to mind. It’s always been a pity, because this album is groundbreaking, and for fans of this era of the Peppers, every track is a hit, which hasn’t been the case with any of their subsequent works. What this album needs is a complete remix from top to bottom, just imagine how amazing it could have sounded. Unfortunately, I doubt we will ever find out. If you want high-quality audio Peppers on vinyl, Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Mother's Milk are the best sounding of their albums on Vinyl, Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo aren't bad either. I'm still happy to own this, but I can't go around saying that miracles have been performed with the re-master, because they haven't.
