Thomas Tomkins, geboren 1572 in St. Davids, Wales, war ein herausragender britischer Komponist, Organist und Cembalist des späten Elisabethanischen Zeitalters und der frühen Stuart-Periode. Als Mitglied einer namhaften Musikerfamilie und Schüler von William Byrd, hinterließ Tomkins ein umfangreiches Werk, das sowohl vokale als auch instrumentale Musik umfasst. Besonders bekannt ist er für seine Beiträge zur englischen Madrigalschule und seine Meisterwerke für Tasteninstrumente und Ensembles. Tomkins gilt als der letzte Vertreter der englischen Virginalisten und war Organist an der Kathedrale von Worcester sowie Mitglied der Königlichen Kapelle.
