      Album Details

Experience the prodigious genius of Felix Mendelssohn with "Wunderkind Felix," a captivating collection of his early masterpieces. This album, released on September 27, 2024, by Channel Classics, showcases Mendelssohn's extraordinary talent, featuring works composed between the ages of 14 and 19. Under the baton of conductor Patrick van der Linden and the exquisite performances by Ars Musica, this recording brings to life the precocious brilliance of one of classical music's most celebrated figures.

The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful "Kyrie in D Minor, MWV A 3," followed by the intricate "String Symphony No. 10 in B Minor, MWV N 10." The choral gem "Ave Maris Stella, MWV C 3" adds a touch of sacred serenity, while the "Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 11, MWV N 13" in its four movements, showcases Mendelssohn's symphonic prowess. The album concludes with the uplifting choral work "Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten, MWV A 7," a testament to Mendelssohn's ability to infuse his compositions with both technical mastery and spiritual depth.

"Wunderkind Felix" is a testament to Mendelssohn's early genius, offering a rare glimpse into the mind of a composer who, like Mozart, demonstrated extraordinary musical abilities from a very young age. The album's reorchestration of the 1st Symphony for chamber orchestra, as presented by Ars Musica, provides a fresh and engaging interpretation of Mendelssohn's youthful works.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 18 minutes, this album is a treasure trove for classical music enthusiasts, featuring a blend of chamber music, choral works, and symphonic pieces that highlight Mendelssohn's versatility and innovation. Whether you are a seasoned classical aficionado or a curious newcomer, "Wunderkind Felix" promises an enriching and inspiring listening experience.

      About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.

Despite his untimely death at the age of 38 in 1847, Mendelssohn's legacy endures, celebrated for his contributions to classical music and his enduring influence on the Romantic era. His music continues to inspire and uplift, a testament to his enduring genius.
