      Album Details

Dive into the heart of jazz history with "Work Done," a captivating live album by the legendary Sonny Stitt, recorded at the iconic Keystone Korner in San Francisco in 1976. This album, released by HighNote Records in 2005, offers a rare opportunity to experience the master saxophonist in his prime, delivering a setlist that blends bebop, hard bop, cool jazz, and acid jazz with his signature flair.

"Work Done" features ten tracks, each a testament to Stitt's virtuosity and his deep understanding of jazz syntax. From the bluesy "Barkan the Blues" to the soulful "The Shadow of Your Smile" and the upbeat "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," Stitt's playing is as engaging as it is technically impressive. The album also includes a track where Sonny introduces the band, providing a personal touch and a glimpse into the live performance experience.

Produced for CD by Joe Fields and live performance produced by Todd Barkan, "Work Done" is a high-quality recording that captures the energy and spontaneity of a live jazz performance. Whether you're a longtime fan of Sonny Stitt or a newcomer to his music, this album is a fantastic addition to any jazz collection. With a duration of just over an hour, it's a perfect way to spend an evening immersed in the rich sounds of jazz history.

      About Sonny Stitt

Sonny Stitt, born Edward Stitt in Boston and raised in Michigan, was a pioneering American jazz saxophonist renowned for his warm, distinctive tone and his mastery of the bebop and hard bop idioms. Nicknamed the "Lone Wolf" by jazz critic Dan Morgenstern, Stitt was known for his relentless touring and his preference for working with different musicians, rather than forming a permanent band. Initially, Stitt's style was compared to that of Charlie Parker, but he soon developed his own unique sound, particularly on the tenor saxophone. His extensive discography, featuring over 100 albums, showcases his versatility and innovation. Stitt's career spanned several decades, from establishing himself on the American jazz scene in the 1960s to making a significant impact on the UK jazz funk scene in the mid-1970s. He was also known for his sax duels with contemporaries like Dexter Gordon and Gene Ammons, further cementing his status as one of the finest bebop saxophonists of his era.
