      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, dramatic world of Hugo Wolf's orchestral songs with the release of "Wolf & Reger: Orchestral Lieder." This captivating collection, released on May 24, 2019, under the Orfeo label, brings together 21 tracks spanning a total of 1 hour and 50 minutes. The album showcases Wolf's mastery of song composition, with a focus on his orchestral adaptations of poems by Goethe, Mörike, and Eichendorff, among others.

Wolf's music is known for its intense emotional depth and intricate musical language, and this album is no exception. The Goethe-Lieder, such as "Prometheus" and "Anakreons Grab," demonstrate Wolf's ability to translate the poetic nuances of Goethe's verses into powerful musical expressions. Similarly, the Mörike-Lieder, including "Denk' es, o Seele!" and "Gebet," reveal Wolf's sensitivity to the subtle shades of meaning in Mörike's poetry.

The album also features works by Max Reger, adding another layer of depth and variety to the collection. Reger's compositions, such as "Der Einsiedler" and "Hymne der Liebe," complement Wolf's songs beautifully, creating a cohesive and engaging listening experience.

Performed by the renowned baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, this album is a testament to the enduring power of Wolf's music. Fischer-Dieskau's rich, expressive voice brings Wolf's compositions to life, making this album a must-listen for fans of classical music and vocal performances. Whether you're a longtime admirer of Hugo Wolf or a newcomer to his work, "Wolf & Reger: Orchestral Lieder" offers a compelling introduction to the world of orchestral songs.

      About Hugo Wolf

Hugo Wolf, born in 1860 in what is now Slovenia, was an Austrian composer who left an indelible mark on the world of art songs, or Lieder, during the late Romantic era. Known for his intense and expressive compositions, Wolf's music is celebrated for its psychological depth and dramatic scope. Influenced by the likes of Wagner, Liszt, and Schubert, his unique style brought a concentrated expressive intensity to the Lied form, setting it apart from other works of the time.

Wolf's life was marked by both brilliance and struggle. He battled depression and syphilis, and his tumultuous personal life earned him the nickname "der wilde Wolf" — the wild Wolf. Despite these challenges, he produced a body of work that includes masterpieces such as the Goethe Songbook and the Mörike-Lieder, which continue to captivate audiences with their themes of love, passion, and fairy tales. His influence on the German Lied is profound, and his compositions remain a cornerstone of the genre. Wolf's legacy endures, not just through his music, but also through his letters and the enduring impact he had on fellow composers like Gustav Mahler. His untimely death in 1903 at the age of 42 cut short a career that had already achieved so much, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire and move listeners.
