      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari with his captivating album "Wolf-Ferrari: Violin Concerto, Op. 26 & Serenade for Strings." Released in 1998 under the CPO label, this album is a testament to the composer's brilliance and his ability to blend classical elegance with a touch of modernity. The album features two of Wolf-Ferrari's most celebrated works: the Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 26, and the Serenade in E-Flat Major.

The Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 26, is a four-movement masterpiece that showcases the virtuosity of the violin alongside the rich, orchestral backdrop. The concerto begins with "Fantasia," a lively and imaginative opening that sets the stage for the romantic "Romanza" and the playful "Improvviso." The concerto concludes with the energetic "Finale. Rondo," leaving the listener in awe of the violin's expressive range.

The Serenade in E-Flat Major is a charming and lyrical work that highlights the beauty of string instruments. Composed of four movements, the serenade begins with an "Allegro" that is both graceful and spirited. The "Andante" offers a moment of serenity, while the "Scherzo" brings a playful and whimsical energy. The album culminates with the "Finale," a joyous and triumphant conclusion.

Performed by the hr-Sinfonieorchester under the direction of Alun Francis, with Ulf Hoelscher as the solo violinist, this album is a must-listen for any classical music enthusiast. The performances are impeccable, capturing the essence of Wolf-Ferrari's compositions with precision and passion. Whether you're a seasoned listener or new to classical music, this album offers a rich and rewarding experience that showcases the timeless beauty of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari's music.

      About Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, born in Venice in 1876, was a composer whose music beautifully blended the traditions of Italian comic opera and German romanticism. Known for his lyrical melodies and rich harmonic palette, Wolf-Ferrari's works often drew inspiration from the plays of Carlo Goldoni, resulting in operas that were both lighthearted and deeply rooted in Italian culture. His most famous work, "Il segreto di Susanna," is a testament to his ability to create engaging and humorous operatic experiences. Despite his initial pursuits in painting, Wolf-Ferrari's musical talents shone through, leading him to study in Munich and eventually become the director of the Liceo Benedetto Marcello in Venice. His compositions, though sometimes considered archaic by modern standards, showcase a masterful command of melody and a unique fusion of Italian and German musical influences. Wolf-Ferrari's legacy endures through his operas and choral works, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of operatic elegance and charm.
