      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the vibrant and diverse orchestral works of Malcolm Williamson, a prominent Australian composer of the 20th century. Released in 2006 on the Chandos label, this album showcases Williamson's distinctive style and mastery of orchestration, spanning a total of 57 minutes across 13 captivating tracks.

The album opens with "Santiago de Espada," a lively overture that sets the stage for the rest of the collection. Following this, the "Our Man in Havana Suite" takes center stage, a multi-movement work that draws inspiration from the spy novel of the same name. This suite is a delightful blend of Latin rhythms and sardonic wit, showcasing Williamson's ability to create engaging and accessible music.

The "Concerto Grosso" is another highlight, featuring three distinct movements that highlight the contrast between soloists and the full orchestra. This piece demonstrates Williamson's skill in writing for both small and large ensembles, creating a rich and dynamic soundscape.

The album concludes with the "Sinfonietta," a three-movement work that is both playful and profound. From the energetic "Toccata" to the haunting "Elegy," this piece showcases the full range of Williamson's compositional abilities.

Throughout the album, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Rumon Gamba, brings Williamson's music to life with precision and passion. Whether you're a longtime fan of orchestral music or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a compelling introduction to the work of Malcolm Williamson and the rich world of orchestral composition.

      About Malcolm Williamson

Malcolm Williamson, AO, CBE (1931–2003), was an Australian composer of remarkable versatility and prolific output. Born in Sydney, Williamson's musical journey began at the age of 11 when he enrolled at the Sydney Conservatorium for instrumental tuition, later delving into composition studies. His career took him to the United Kingdom, where he eventually became the Master of the Queen's Music from 1975 until his passing in 2003, making him the only non-British composer to hold this prestigious position.

Williamson's compositions are celebrated for their expansive dimensions, harmonic adventurousness, and intriguing, ever-shifting concepts. His works span a wide range of genres, including choral music, orchestral pieces, and concertos. Notable works include the "Williamson Overture," "Santiago de Espada," "Elevamini – Symphony No.1," and the "Sinfonia concertante for three trumpets, piano, and string orchestra." His choral music, in particular, is lauded for its depth and complexity.

Beyond his classical compositions, Williamson also contributed to film scores, including the haunting "The Masks of Death" from the Tyburn/Channel Four Television program and "The Horror of Frankenstein." His Piano Concerto No. 2 in F-Sharp Minor is another testament to his mastery of the form.

Williamson's legacy endures as a composer of astonishing facility, whose works continue to captivate audiences with their innovative spirit and emotional resonance.
