      Album Details

Dive into the rich, resonant world of the viola with William Primrose: Viola Treasures, a meticulously remastered collection showcasing the virtuosity of William Primrose, one of the most celebrated violists of the 20th century. Released on July 19, 2024, this album is a testament to Primrose's mastery and the enduring appeal of the viola repertoire.

The album spans a little over an hour and nineteen minutes, featuring twelve tracks that highlight Primrose's technical prowess and expressive depth. The centerpiece is Béla Bartók's Viola Concerto, Sz. 120, presented in its entirety and remastered for 2024, offering a fresh perspective on this modern classic. The concerto's three movements—Moderato, Adagio religioso, and Allegro vivace—demonstrate the full range of the viola's expressive capabilities.

In addition to the Bartók concerto, the album includes selections from Ludwig van Beethoven's Octet in E-Flat Major, Op. 20, another work that showcases the ensemble's dynamic interplay. The Octet's four movements—Allegro moderato ma con fuoco, Andante, Scherzo, and Presto—are performed with precision and passion, highlighting the intricate textures and harmonies of Beethoven's score.

The album also features arrangements by the legendary violinist Jascha Heifetz, including a rendition of Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 2 in B Minor, Op. 7, arranged for viola and piano, and a beautiful arrangement of Stephen Foster's "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair." These arrangements offer a unique perspective on familiar works, showcasing Primrose's versatility and artistry.

William Primrose: Viola Treasures is a celebration of the viola and its rich repertoire, performed by one of the instrument's greatest champions. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of the viola, this album offers a captivating journey through some of the most beautiful and challenging works in the viola's repertoire. The album is released by Parnassus and is available in high-resolution audio, ensuring that every nuance of Primrose's playing is captured with clarity and precision.
