      About William Primrose

      William Primrose, born in Glasgow in 1904, was a pioneering Scottish violist whose contributions to the world of classical music are immeasurable. Primrose began his musical journey on the violin at the tender age of four, eventually switching to the viola, an instrument he would elevate to new heights. He studied under the renowned Eugène Ysaÿe and performed with prestigious ensembles such as the London String Quartet and the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Primrose's solo career took him around the globe, showcasing his virtuosity and helping to establish the viola as a solo instrument of significant importance.

      Throughout his career, Primrose commissioned new works, including pieces from Béla Bartók and Benjamin Britten, and authored several influential books on viola technique. His recordings span a wide range of repertoire, from Paganini to Walton, and his performances are celebrated for their technical brilliance and expressive depth. Primrose's legacy extends beyond his performances; he taught at esteemed institutions like the University of Southern California and Brigham Young University, inspiring generations of violists.
