      Album Details

Dive into the rich tapestry of French chamber music with Mats Lidström's captivating album, featuring a blend of sonatas and songs that showcase the depth and diversity of the genre. This 2003 release on the Hyperion label presents a compelling collection of works by Charles Marie Widor, Albéric Magnard, and Charles Koechlin, performed with exquisite skill and sensitivity by Mats Lidström and pianist Bengt Forsberg.

The album opens with Albéric Magnard's Cello Sonata in A Major, Op. 20, a work that demands both technical prowess and expressive depth. The sonata's four movements, ranging from the energetic "Sans lenteur" to the poignant "Funèbre," offer a comprehensive showcase of the artists' interpretive abilities. Following this, the album delves into Charles Koechlin's "Chansons bretonnes, Book 3," a cycle of songs that draw inspiration from Breton folklore and poetry. These pieces, with their evocative melodies and harmonies, provide a stark contrast to the sonatas, highlighting the versatility of the cello and the artists' interpretive range.

The album concludes with Charles Marie Widor's Cello Sonata in A Major, Op. 80, a work that further demonstrates the artists' command of the repertoire. The sonata's three movements, from the lively "Allegro moderato" to the spirited "Allegro vivace," bring the album to a thrilling close.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 11 minutes, this album offers a substantial and rewarding listening experience. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, Mats Lidström and Bengt Forsberg's performances are sure to captivate and inspire. The album's high-quality recording and insightful performances make it a standout addition to any classical music collection.
