When I Fall in Love - Brad Mehldau

      Album Details

In the early 1990s, a young Brad Mehldau was beginning to make waves in the jazz world, and his debut album, "When I Fall in Love," is a testament to his burgeoning talent. Recorded in the intimate setting of La Cova del Drac in Barcelona, this album captures the essence of a live performance, with the spontaneous energy and interplay of a true jazz trio. Joined by bassist Mario Rossy and drummer Jorge Rossy, Mehldau delivers a collection of standards and original compositions that showcase his virtuosic piano playing and deep understanding of jazz tradition.

The album opens with "Anthropology," a Charlie Parker classic that sets the tone for the rest of the record, with Mehldau's intricate melodies and harmonies weaving in and out of the rhythm section's tight grooves. "At A Loss" and "Countdown" are original compositions that highlight Mehldau's compositional skills, while "When I Fall In Love" and "I Fall In Love Too Easily" offer lush, romantic ballads that showcase his sensitivity and lyricism. The album concludes with "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," a classic tune that Mehldau imbues with his own unique voice.

"When I Fall in Love" is a stunning debut from one of jazz's most important pianists, and a testament to the power of live performance. Recorded in 1993 and released on Fresh Sound Records, this album is a essential addition to any jazz fan's collection, and a great introduction to the work of Brad Mehldau.

      About Brad Mehldau

Brad Mehldau is a renowned American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger, celebrated for his unique blend of jazz exploration, classical romanticism, and pop allure. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1970, Mehldau began his musical journey at the age of six, initially trained in classical piano before delving into jazz during his teens. His career took off in the mid-1990s when he joined saxophonist Joshua Redman's quartet, and he has since led his own trio, known for its intimate and passionate exchanges.

Mehldau's playing is characterized by its contrapuntal style, integrating the art of fugue into improvisation, a nod to his admiration for Bach. His discography is extensive, with notable works including "The Art of the Trio" series, "Highway Rider," and a solo Beatles album. Mehldau's performances are not just musical events but journeys into the depths of emotion and creativity, making him one of the most influential and acclaimed jazz artists of his generation.
