      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the profound and haunting world of Mieczysław Weinberg's "The Passenger, Op. 97," a monumental opera that stands as a testament to the human spirit amidst the horrors of the Holocaust. Composed in 1968, this powerful work is a collaboration between Weinberg and librettist Alexander Medvedev, bringing to life a story that resonates with the personal experiences of Weinberg and his family during the tumultuous years of wartime and Soviet persecution.

This 2021 release, spanning over two hours and thirty-five minutes, is a meticulous recording that captures the essence of Weinberg's compositional genius. The opera is divided into two acts, each filled with scenes that delve into the lives of characters grappling with the aftermath of the Holocaust. The tracklist includes a prelude and a series of scenes that unfold like a gripping narrative, from the haunting "Schiff" (Ship) to the poignant "Baracke" (Barrack) and the chilling "Magazin" (Magazine).

Weinberg's score is a masterclass in orchestration, featuring the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Roland Kluttig. The opera is sung in multiple languages, reflecting the diverse voices and experiences of its characters. The performances are nothing short of breathtaking, with each singer bringing depth and authenticity to their roles.

"The Passenger, Op. 97" is not just an opera; it is a historical document, a memorial, and a call to remembrance. Weinberg's music, infused with his personal and familial experiences, offers a unique perspective on the Holocaust, one that is both intimate and universal. The opera's themes of survival, memory, and the enduring human spirit are as relevant today as they were when it was first composed.

This album is a must-listen for anyone interested in classical music, opera, and the enduring power of storytelling. It is a reminder of the past, a reflection on the present, and a beacon for the future.

      About Mieczysław Weinberg

Mieczysław Weinberg, born in Warsaw in 1919, was a prolific composer and pianist whose life and work spanned the tumultuous landscapes of 20th-century Europe. Surrounded by music from an early age, Weinberg's parents worked in the Yiddish theatre, fostering his love for composition and performance. By the age of 12, he was already enrolled at the Warsaw Conservatory, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of Józef Turczyński. His journey took a dramatic turn with the outbreak of World War II, forcing him to flee Nazi-occupied Poland and seek refuge in the Soviet Union. Despite the challenges and discrimination he faced under Stalin, Weinberg's talent shone through, earning him recognition and a close friendship with the legendary Dmitri Shostakovich.

Weinberg's extensive body of work includes 22 symphonies, 17 string quartets, 7 operas, and numerous other compositions that blend traditional and contemporary forms with ethnic influences. His music, though not widely known during his lifetime, has since gained acclaim for its depth and emotional resonance. Weinberg's legacy is a testament to his resilience and artistic genius, making him one of the most intriguing and underappreciated composers of the 20th century.
