      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Mieczysław Weinberg with his compelling album, "Weinberg: Symphony No. 5 & Sinfonietta No. 1." This classical masterpiece, released on November 14, 2003, under the Chandos label, showcases Weinberg's extraordinary compositional prowess and his ability to evoke deep emotions through his music.

The album features two of Weinberg's most notable works: the Symphony No. 5 in F Minor, Op. 76, and the Sinfonietta No. 1, Op. 41. The Symphony No. 5, a four-movement opus, begins with an "Allegro moderato" that sets a contemplative tone, followed by the haunting "Adagio sostenuto." The third movement, "Allegro," brings a sense of urgency and intensity, while the final "Andantino" offers a reflective conclusion. The Sinfonietta No. 1, also in four movements, starts with an "Allegro risoluto," showcasing Weinberg's dynamic range and rhythmic precision. The "Lento" movement provides a moment of serene beauty, the "Allegretto" brings a playful charm, and the "Vivace" concludes the piece with a lively and energetic flourish.

Recorded in March 2003 by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Gabriel Chmura, this album captures the essence of Weinberg's compositions with remarkable clarity and depth. The performances are both technically impressive and emotionally resonant, making this a standout release in the classical music genre.

Mieczysław Weinberg, born in Warsaw to parents involved in the Yiddish theatre, was a prolific composer and pianist whose works span a wide range of styles and influences. His music, often characterized by its rich harmonies and intricate structures, continues to captivate audiences and critics alike. With a duration of just over an hour, this album offers a comprehensive introduction to Weinberg's symphonic and chamber works, making it a valuable addition to any classical music enthusiast's collection.

      About Mieczysław Weinberg

Mieczysław Weinberg, born in Warsaw in 1919, was a prolific composer and pianist whose life and work spanned the tumultuous landscapes of 20th-century Europe. Surrounded by music from an early age, Weinberg's parents worked in the Yiddish theatre, fostering his love for composition and performance. By the age of 12, he was already enrolled at the Warsaw Conservatory, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of Józef Turczyński. His journey took a dramatic turn with the outbreak of World War II, forcing him to flee Nazi-occupied Poland and seek refuge in the Soviet Union. Despite the challenges and discrimination he faced under Stalin, Weinberg's talent shone through, earning him recognition and a close friendship with the legendary Dmitri Shostakovich.

Weinberg's extensive body of work includes 22 symphonies, 17 string quartets, 7 operas, and numerous other compositions that blend traditional and contemporary forms with ethnic influences. His music, though not widely known during his lifetime, has since gained acclaim for its depth and emotional resonance. Weinberg's legacy is a testament to his resilience and artistic genius, making him one of the most intriguing and underappreciated composers of the 20th century.
