      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Mieczysław Weinberg, a prolific 20th-century composer whose works span seven operas, 22 symphonies, and numerous other compositions. This album, released in 2014 by ECM Records, showcases a selection of Weinberg's masterpieces performed live in Lockenhaus and Neuhardenberg between 2012 and 2013. Spanning a total of 1 hour and 40 minutes, the album features a diverse range of pieces, including the Symphony No. 10, Sonata No. 3 for Solo Violin, and the String Trio, among others.

The Symphony No. 10, Op. 98, is a standout piece, composed in 1957. It is a five-movement work that showcases Weinberg's unique blend of neoclassical and romantic styles, with influences from his Polish-Jewish heritage. The Sonata No. 3 for Solo Violin, Op. 126, is another highlight, demonstrating Weinberg's mastery of the violin and his ability to create deeply expressive and technically demanding pieces. The String Trio, Op. 48, is a more intimate work, composed in 1945, and is a beautiful example of Weinberg's ability to create complex and nuanced textures with a small ensemble.

This album is a testament to Weinberg's enduring legacy and his ability to create music that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

      About Mieczysław Weinberg

Mieczysław Weinberg, born in Warsaw in 1919, was a prolific composer and pianist whose life and work spanned the tumultuous landscapes of 20th-century Europe. Surrounded by music from an early age, Weinberg's parents worked in the Yiddish theatre, fostering his love for composition and performance. By the age of 12, he was already enrolled at the Warsaw Conservatory, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of Józef Turczyński. His journey took a dramatic turn with the outbreak of World War II, forcing him to flee Nazi-occupied Poland and seek refuge in the Soviet Union. Despite the challenges and discrimination he faced under Stalin, Weinberg's talent shone through, earning him recognition and a close friendship with the legendary Dmitri Shostakovich.

Weinberg's extensive body of work includes 22 symphonies, 17 string quartets, 7 operas, and numerous other compositions that blend traditional and contemporary forms with ethnic influences. His music, though not widely known during his lifetime, has since gained acclaim for its depth and emotional resonance. Weinberg's legacy is a testament to his resilience and artistic genius, making him one of the most intriguing and underappreciated composers of the 20th century.
