      Album Details

Discover the enchanting world of Karl Weigl with his captivating album, "Weigl: Symphony No. 1 in E Major, Op. 5 & Pictures and Tales Suite." Released in 2019 under the CapriccioNR label, this album is a delightful blend of classical elegance and whimsical storytelling, spanning a total duration of one hour.

The album opens with Weigl's Symphony No. 1 in E Major, Op. 5, a four-movement masterpiece composed in 1908. This symphony, rooted in the Romantic tradition, showcases Weigl's early work and his time working under Gustav Mahler. The symphony's movements, ranging from "Leicht bewegt" to "Lebhaft," offer a rich tapestry of emotions and musical depth.

The second half of the album features the "Pictures and Tales Suite," originally written as short piano pieces and later orchestrated by Weigl in 1922. This suite for small orchestra includes six charming pieces, each evoking vivid imagery and narratives. From the enchanting "Once upon a Time" to the ethereal "Elves Dance in the Moonlight," these compositions transport the listener to a world of fantasy and wonder.

Conducted by Jürgen Bruns and recorded in October 2018, this album is a testament to Weigl's enduring legacy and his ability to blend musical sophistication with imaginative storytelling. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises a captivating and immersive listening experience.

      About Karl Weigl

Karl Weigl, born in 1881 in Vienna, was a composer and pianist whose life and work spanned two continents and two world wars. Growing up in the vibrant musical culture of fin-de-siècle Vienna, Weigl studied piano with Alexander Zemlinsky and composition with Robert Fuchs, and even served as a repetiteur under the tutelage of Gustav Mahler. His early career flourished in his hometown, but the rise of Nazism forced him to flee in 1938. Settling in New York, Weigl continued to compose and teach, becoming a naturalized American citizen in 1943. His music, deeply rooted in the Viennese Post-Romantic style, includes a rich body of chamber and orchestral works that are increasingly being rediscovered and recorded. Weigl's personal life was also marked by his marriage to pianist and composer Vally Weigl, with whom he shared a deep artistic connection. Despite the challenges he faced, Weigl's compositions reflect a unique voice that deserves to be explored and celebrated.
