      Album Details

Discover the captivating works of Austrian composer Karl Weigl with this remarkable album, featuring two of his most notable concertos. Released on October 2, 2015, under the Capriccio label, this album showcases Weigl's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in E-Flat Major and Violin Concerto in D Major, both composed in the early 20th century.

The Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, composed in 1924, is a testament to Weigl's innovative spirit and technical prowess. This concerto, written for pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm during World War I, is a stunning display of musical depth and complexity, performed masterfully by Florian Krumpöck. The concerto is divided into three movements: I. Allegro, II. Adagio, and III. Rondo. Allegro, each offering a unique blend of emotion and virtuosity.

The Violin Concerto in D Major, composed in 1928, is another gem in Weigl's repertoire. This concerto, also in three movements— I. Allegro, II. Largo, and III. Allegro Molto—showcases Weigl's ability to create rich, melodic landscapes that captivate the listener. The Norddeutsche Philharmonie, conducted by Thomas Dorsch, provides a lush and supportive backdrop for these performances.

With a total duration of 70 minutes, this album offers a comprehensive exploration of Weigl's concertos, providing a deep dive into his musical style and contributions to the classical genre. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer looking to explore the works of Karl Weigl, this album is a fantastic addition to your collection.

      About Karl Weigl

Karl Weigl, born in 1881 in Vienna, was a composer and pianist whose life and work spanned two continents and two world wars. Growing up in the vibrant musical culture of fin-de-siècle Vienna, Weigl studied piano with Alexander Zemlinsky and composition with Robert Fuchs, and even served as a repetiteur under the tutelage of Gustav Mahler. His early career flourished in his hometown, but the rise of Nazism forced him to flee in 1938. Settling in New York, Weigl continued to compose and teach, becoming a naturalized American citizen in 1943. His music, deeply rooted in the Viennese Post-Romantic style, includes a rich body of chamber and orchestral works that are increasingly being rediscovered and recorded. Weigl's personal life was also marked by his marriage to pianist and composer Vally Weigl, with whom he shared a deep artistic connection. Despite the challenges he faced, Weigl's compositions reflect a unique voice that deserves to be explored and celebrated.
