      Album Details

Reinhold Friedrich, a celebrated trumpeter known for his virtuosic performances and deep musical insight, presents a captivating album that showcases his extraordinary talent and versatility. Recorded in 2001 under the Capriccio label, this album is a compelling journey through contemporary classical music, featuring works by three distinct composers: Christian Jost Walter, Wolfgang Rihm, and Brian Mason.

The album opens with Walter's "4 Pieces Against Stagnation," a dynamic and expressive suite that challenges both the performer and the listener. Each of the four movements—"Sostenuto a cantabile," "Comodo," "Con moto, wie auf unruhigem Meer," and "Calmo, windstill"—offers a unique exploration of the trumpet's capabilities, from lyrical melodicism to intense rhythmic drive.

Following Walter's suite is Rihm's "Marsyas," a rhapsodic work for trumpet with percussion and orchestra. Composed between 1998 and 1999, this piece is a testament to Rihm's innovative and often provocative style, pushing the boundaries of traditional orchestration and form. Friedrich's performance is nothing short of electrifying, capturing the piece's raw energy and intricate detail.

The album concludes with Mason's "Trumpet Concerto," a work that highlights Friedrich's technical prowess and musical sensitivity. The concerto's intricate passages and soaring melodies provide a fitting finale to this diverse and engaging collection.

Throughout the album, Friedrich is accompanied by the hr-Sinfonieorchester, conducted by Sian Edwards, with Robyn Schulkowsky on percussion and Lukas Vis on additional percussion. Their collective artistry elevates each piece, creating a rich and immersive listening experience.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 9 minutes, this album is a testament to Reinhold Friedrich's extraordinary skill and the enduring power of contemporary classical music. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rewarding and thought-provoking exploration of the trumpet's expressive potential.
