      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the sacred and hauntingly beautiful world of Tomás Luis de Victoria, the most renowned Spanish composer of the Renaissance, with the album "Victoria, T.L. De: Vocal Music." Released on January 1, 2006, under the Sono Luminus label, this collection of vocal music is a profound exploration of the Tenebrae Responsories, a series of chants traditionally performed during the Holy Week.

The album spans a duration of 1 hour and 6 minutes, featuring 18 tracks that encapsulate the essence of Gregorian chant, choral, medieval, and requiem genres. Each piece, such as "Tenebrae factae sunt," "Caligaverunt oculi mei," and "Aestimatus sum," is performed with meticulous precision by Stephen Smith and the Ensemble Corund, bringing to life the intricate polyphony and devotional depth characteristic of Victoria's compositions.

This album is a testament to Victoria's mastery of sacred music, offering a contemplative and spiritually uplifting experience. Whether you are a seasoned enthusiast of Renaissance music or a newcomer to the genre, this collection promises to be a captivating journey through the timeless works of one of history's most revered composers.

      About Tomás Luis de Victoria

Tomás Luis de Victoria, born around 1548 in Sanchidrián, Spain, is celebrated as the most renowned Spanish composer of the Renaissance era. His musical journey began as a choirboy in Ávila Cathedral, where he also honed his skills on the keyboard. Victoria's career flourished in both Spain and Italy, and he is revered for his intense and deeply emotional motets, as well as his profound compositions for the Offices of the Dead and Holy Week. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Victoria's extensive body of work is almost exclusively devoted to sacred and polyphonic vocal music, set to Latin texts. His contributions to the Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation are monumental, placing him alongside giants like Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Orlande de Lassus. Victoria's legacy endures, inspiring generations with his timeless choral masterpieces.
