      Via Crucis - Christina Pluhar
      Via Crucis - Christina Pluhar

      Album Details

In "Via Crucis," Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L'Arpeggiata present a captivating exploration of the Passion of Christ through the lens of 17th-century Italian sacred music and Corsican folk traditions. Released in 2010, this album is a unique blend of early Baroque compositions and traditional folk songs, all centered around the theme of Christ's suffering and resurrection.

The album features a stellar lineup of vocalists, including the renowned countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, soprano Nuria Rial, and the distinctive earthy voices of the Corsican male quartet Barbara Fortuna. Together, they bring to life a collection of works that span from the solemn and reflective to the fervent and passionate, reflecting the deep religious sentiment that permeated Southern Europe during this period.

"Via Crucis" is a pastiche of styles and influences, with pieces ranging from the hauntingly beautiful "Stabat Mater" to the lively and energetic "Canario." The album's 18 tracks, lasting just over an hour, offer a rich and varied listening experience, showcasing the versatility and skill of both the performers and the composers whose works they interpret.

Recorded over several sessions between 2004 and 2009 in France, the album benefits from a warm and intimate sound, with the acoustics of the Chapelle de l'Hôpital Notre-Dame du Bon-Secours in Paris lending a sense of reverence and solemnity to the performances. The result is a deeply moving and engaging exploration of a theme that has inspired artists for centuries.

Whether you're a fan of early music, folk traditions, or simply appreciate beautiful singing and instrumentation, "Via Crucis" is sure to captivate and inspire. With its unique blend of styles and influences, this album is a testament to the enduring power of music to connect us with our shared humanity and the profound experiences that have shaped our collective consciousness.
