      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, evocative sounds of Sándor Veress' "Veress: Threnos, Klarinettenkonzert & Tromboniade," a captivating exploration of the composer's unique musical language. This 2014 release on the Musiques Suisses label offers a compelling journey through Veress' distinctive style, blending his Hungarian roots with his Swiss influences.

The album opens with "Threnos (In memoriam Béla Bartók)," a poignant tribute to Veress' mentor and fellow Hungarian composer. The Clarinet Concerto follows, showcasing the instrument's expressive range across three movements, performed brilliantly by Fabio Di Casola with the Miskolc North Hungarian Symphony Orchestra under the baton of János Mészáros. The concerto's intricate rhythms and haunting melodies highlight Veress' mastery of orchestration and his deep understanding of the clarinet's capabilities.

The album's centerpiece is the Double Trombone Concerto, "Tromboniade," featuring the powerful duo of Branimir Slokar and Armin Bachmann. This three-movement work is a tour de force for the trombone, with the soloists navigating complex, virtuosic passages that push the boundaries of the instrument. The concerto's dynamic range, from the aggressive opening movement to the tender, introspective cadenza, offers a compelling exploration of the trombone's expressive potential.

Throughout the album, Veress' compositions reveal his deep respect for tradition and his innovative approach to form and harmony. His use of folk elements, intricate rhythms, and rich orchestration creates a unique and engaging listening experience. Whether you're a longtime fan of Veress' music or a newcomer to his work, "Veress: Threnos, Klarinettenkonzert & Tromboniade" is an essential addition to your classical music collection.

      About Sándor Veress

Sándor Veress, born in 1907 in Kolozsvár, now Cluj-Napoca, Romania, was a composer who bridged two musical worlds: his native Hungary and his adopted home of Switzerland. Veress's early career was deeply influenced by his work with László Lajtha at the Budapest Ethnological Museum and his association with Béla Bartók, reflecting in his compositions a rich tapestry of Hungarian folk music traditions. His later life, spent in Switzerland from 1949 until his death in 1992, saw him become a Swiss citizen and continue his prolific compositional journey. Veress's works, including his evocative 'Transylvanian Dances' and his string quartets, showcase his unique voice, blending his Hungarian heritage with the influences of his Swiss environment. His music remains a testament to his cultural journey and his enduring legacy as a composer.
