      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of classical chamber music with the Delmé Quartet's 1989 release, "Verdi & R. Strauss: String Quartets." This exquisite collection showcases the Delmé Quartet's mastery of the string quartet form, featuring works by two giants of the Romantic era: Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Strauss.

The album opens with Verdi's String Quartet in E Minor, a piece that beautifully encapsulates the composer's operatic intensity and emotional depth. The quartet's performance is marked by its rich, resonant tones and precise phrasing, bringing Verdi's dramatic and lyrical passages to life. The second half of the album is dedicated to Richard Strauss' String Quartet in A Major, Op. 2, a youthful and exuberant work that showcases the Delmé Quartet's technical prowess and musical sensitivity.

Recorded in June 1988 and released on Hyperion, this album is a testament to the Delmé Quartet's enduring legacy as one of the most celebrated string quartets of the 20th century. The ensemble, founded in London in 1962, was known for its innovative programming and dynamic performances, and this album is no exception. With a total runtime of just over 52 minutes, it's a concise yet powerful exploration of the string quartet repertoire.

The Delmé Quartet, comprising Galina Solodchin and John Trusler on violins, John Underwood on viola, and Simon Bailey on cello, delivers a performance that is both technically impressive and deeply expressive. Their playing is characterized by a warm, blended tone and a keen sense of musical storytelling, making this album a must-listen for fans of classical music and chamber music enthusiasts alike.
