      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the profound and evocative compositions of Pēteris Vasks with his album "Vasks, P.: Symphony No. 3 - Cello Concerto." Released on January 1, 2006, under the Ondine label, this album is a masterful blend of minimalism and opera, showcasing Vasks' unique ability to weave deep emotional narratives through his music. The album features two significant works: the Symphony No. 3 and the Cello Concerto No. 1, each divided into multiple movements that explore a range of moods and textures.

The Symphony No. 3 is a powerful and introspective piece, divided into four movements, each marked by its own distinct character and depth. The Cello Concerto No. 1, performed by the talented Marko Ylönen, is a tour de force of cello virtuosity, with movements titled Cantus I, Toccata I, Monologhi, Toccata II, and Cantus II. Each movement offers a different facet of the cello's expressive range, from lyrical and melodic passages to intricate and rhythmic sections.

Conducted by John Storgårds and performed by the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, this album captures the essence of Vasks' compositional style, which often draws inspiration from nature and the human condition. The combination of the orchestra's rich sound and Ylönen's exquisite cello playing creates a captivating musical experience that resonates long after the final note fades.

With a duration of 1 hour and 16 minutes, this album is a testament to Vasks' ability to craft compelling and thought-provoking music. Whether you are a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer to the genre, "Vasks, P.: Symphony No. 3 - Cello Concerto" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience that highlights the beauty and complexity of Vasks' compositions.

      About Pēteris Vasks

Pēteris Vasks, born in 1946, is one of Latvia's most renowned and internationally acclaimed composers, celebrated for his significant contributions to academic music in the late 20th and 21st centuries. His works, which span genres such as minimalism and opera, have earned him multiple Great Music Awards and a place among the most respected composers in Europe. Vasks' music is deeply philosophical, often exploring the spiritual and existential dimensions of sound. He views music as the most divine of arts, believing that it can effortlessly connect to the divine and express the spirit. His compositions, including the renowned 1st Symphony "Voices," have garnered international recognition since the early 1990s. Vasks' personal life is as rich as his musical legacy, sharing his home with his wife, director Dzintra Geka, in a house inherited from his great-aunt. His deep connection to music is evident in his words, "I could say that I am a happy person. Because the foundation of my life is music. I live in music, and what could be more beautiful than that?"
