      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the profound and intense world of Galina Ustvolskaya with her album "Ustvolskaya: Compositions I, II & III." Released in 1995 under the Decca Music Group Ltd. label, this collection showcases three of Ustvolskaya's most compelling compositions, each a testament to her unique and powerful musical voice.

The album opens with "Composition I: Dona nobis pacem," a three-movement work that blends sacred text with Ustvolskaya's distinctive compositional style. The piece is a plea for peace, its haunting melodies and rhythmic complexity drawing the listener in.

"Composition II: Dies irae" follows, a ten-movement work that delves into themes of judgment and apocalypse. This piece is a tour de force, demanding both technical skill and emotional depth from the performers. Each movement builds on the last, creating a sense of inexorable momentum that culminates in a powerful and unsettling finale.

The album concludes with "Composition III: Benedictus qui venit," a single-movement work that offers a moment of respite and reflection. This piece is a meditation on blessing and arrival, its serene melodies and gentle rhythms providing a stark contrast to the intensity of the preceding works.

Performed by the Schönberg Ensemble under the direction of Reinbert de Leeuw, this album is a masterclass in contemporary classical music. The ensemble's precision and passion bring Ustvolskaya's compositions to life, revealing the full depth and complexity of her musical vision. Whether you're a longtime fan of contemporary classical music or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.

      About Galina Ustvolskaya

Galina Ustvolskaya, born Galina Ivanovna Ustvolskaya, was a Russian composer of classical music known for her stern and unyielding musical style. Born in 1919, Ustvolskaya studied at the Leningrad Conservatory from 1937 to 1947, where she honed her distinctive compositional voice. Her works, which span various ensembles from solo pieces to large orchestral compositions, have garnered both admiration and controversy for their uncompromising nature. Ustvolskaya's reclusive lifestyle and steadfast artistic principles, as exemplified by her quote, 'We should only play music that is genuine and strong,' have only added to her enigmatic allure. Despite decades of neglect, her music has gained a dedicated following in recent years, with her piano sonatas and other works receiving critical acclaim. Ustvolskaya's compositions, marked by their radical resistance and musical brilliance, continue to captivate audiences and inspire new interpretations.
