      Album Details

Ornette Coleman's 1971 album, Twins, is a fascinating compilation of outtakes from his seminal recording sessions between 1959 and 1961. Assembled without Coleman's input, the album features unreleased material from the sessions that produced The Shape of Jazz to Come, This Is Our Music, Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation, and Ornette!. The result is a captivating collection of free jazz, jazz, avant-garde, hard bop, and bebop tracks that showcase Coleman's innovative and boundary-pushing style.

The album's five tracks, including 'First Take', 'Little Symphony', 'Monk and the Nun', 'Check Up', and 'Joy of a Toy', demonstrate Coleman's mastery of saxophone and his ability to craft complex, improvisational pieces. Recorded at various studios, including A&R Studios in New York City and Radio Recorders, the sessions that produced these tracks were originally intended for other albums, but they have been brought together here to create a unique and compelling listening experience.

Released on 1 January 1971 by Rhino Atlantic, Twins is a must-listen for fans of Ornette Coleman and jazz enthusiasts alike. With its eclectic mix of styles and improvisational approach, the album is a testament to Coleman's innovative spirit and his contribution to the development of free jazz and avant-garde music. Clocking in at 43 minutes, Twins is a concise yet powerful album that showcases Coleman's skill and creativity as a composer and performer.

      About Ornette Coleman

Ornette Coleman, born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1930, was a revolutionary figure in the world of jazz, renowned for his role as a founding father of the free jazz movement. A multi-instrumentalist proficient in saxophone, trumpet, and violin, Coleman's innovative approach to composition and improvisation challenged the conventions of traditional jazz. His groundbreaking 1960 album "Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation" epitomized his experimental style, which often eschewed conventional harmony and tonality in favor of spontaneous ensemble playing and blues-infused phrasing. Coleman's career spanned the golden age of jazz and the American avant-garde, making him a beloved yet polarizing figure. His bold innovations have left an indelible mark on the genre, inspiring generations of musicians and earning him a place among the most influential artists in jazz history.
