      Album Details

Dive into the captivating world of Erkki-Sven Tüür with his 2017 album, a masterful blend of orchestral brilliance and contemporary classical innovation. This album showcases three remarkable works: the Clarinet Concerto "Peregrinus ecstaticus," the evocative "Le poids des vies non vécues," and the Concerto for Violin, Clarinet & Orchestra "Noēsis." Each piece is a testament to Tüür's unique compositional style, seamlessly blending intensity and introspection.

The Clarinet Concerto "Peregrinus ecstaticus" is a three-movement journey, performed exquisitely by Christoffer Sundqvist with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Hannu Lintu. The concerto's title, inspired by the medieval mystic Gerbert of Aurillac, reflects a spiritual quest, mirrored in the music's dynamic shifts and profound depth.

"Le poids des vies non vécues," meaning "The Weight of Unlived Lives," is a poignant orchestral piece that explores the heavy weight of lost opportunities and the lives we might have led. It's a hauntingly beautiful composition that lingers in the mind long after the final note fades.

The album concludes with the Concerto for Violin, Clarinet & Orchestra "Noēsis," another three-movement work that highlights the interplay between the violin and clarinet, with the orchestra providing a rich, textured backdrop. The title "Noēsis," derived from the Greek word for "understanding" or "insight," suggests a musical exploration of knowledge and perception.

Recorded by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and released under the Ondine label, this album is a stunning showcase of Erkki-Sven Tüür's compositional prowess. With a total duration of 57 minutes, it's an immersive experience that will captivate fans of contemporary classical music and orchestral works.

      About Erkki-Sven Tüür

Erkki-Sven Tüür, born on the enchanting island of Hiiumaa, Estonia, is a renowned composer whose musical journey is as captivating as his compositions. Beginning his musical education in Tallinn, Tüür honed his skills in playing the flute and percussion at the esteemed Georg Ots Music School. His early career saw him as a member of the rock band In Spess, but his true calling lay in composition. Tüür studied under the guidance of professor Jaan Rääts at the Tallinn Conservatory and further refined his craft with private lessons from Lepo Sumera.

Tüür's works, such as his Symphony No. 7 "Pietas" and Piano Concerto, have garnered international acclaim and are celebrated for their depth and innovation. His music, often performed by prestigious orchestras and conductors, reflects a unique blend of his classical training and rock influences, creating a sound that is distinctly his own. Tüür's ability to evoke vivid imagery, such as associating the flute with "bright light in the far distance," makes his compositions a rich and immersive experience for any listener.
