TURINA: Piano Trios - Joaquín Turina

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, expressive world of Joaquín Turina's piano trios with this captivating album, released on Naxos in 2001. Spanning a little over an hour, this collection showcases the complete piano trios of the Spanish composer, performed by the esteemed Trío Arbós. The ensemble, featuring Juan Carlos Garvayo on piano, Miguel Borrego on violin, and an unnamed cellist, delivers a nuanced and compelling interpretation of Turina's works.

The album opens with the Piano Trio No. 1 in D Major, Op. 35, a three-movement piece that blends classical forms with Spanish folk influences. The second trio, Piano Trio No. 2 in B Minor, Op. 76, is a more expansive work, with three movements that range from the contemplative to the lively. The album also includes "Circulo, Op. 91," a three-movement suite that evokes the cycle of day and night, and the Piano Trio in F Major, a four-movement work that showcases Turina's lyrical and rhythmic inventiveness.

Turina's music is known for its rich harmonies, evocative melodies, and rhythmic vitality, and these works are no exception. The Trío Arbós brings out the full range of these qualities, from the intricate counterpoint of the fugue in the first trio to the lively dance rhythms of the final movement of the F Major trio. The album was recorded in May 2001, with the first three works recorded on the 22nd and 23rd, and the final trio recorded on a later date. The sound quality is excellent, with a warm, resonant acoustic that allows the listener to fully appreciate the subtleties of the performances.

Whether you're a longtime fan of Turina's music or a newcomer to his works, this album offers a rewarding and engaging listening experience. The Trío Arbós's performances are both technically impressive and deeply expressive, bringing out the full range of emotions and moods in Turina's music. So sit back, relax, and let the music of Joaquín Turina transport you to a world of rich harmonies, evocative melodies, and rhythmic vitality.
