      Album Details

Mats Rondin's "Tuba Concertos (21st Century) - Hogberg, F. / Sandstrom, J. / Aho, K." is a captivating exploration of contemporary classical music, released on June 30, 2009, under the BIS label. This album showcases the versatility and expressive power of the tuba through three distinct concertos, each offering a unique journey into the world of modern orchestral composition.

The album opens with Fredrik Hogberg's "Rocky Island Boat Bay," a three-movement suite that blends vigorous energy with lyrical beauty and rhythmic complexity. The first part, "Molto vigoroso," sets a dynamic tone, while the second part introduces a tender love song and a graceful menuette. The suite concludes with a lively "Chanson populaire" and a thrilling finale.

Next, Jan Sandström's "The Lemon House" takes the listener on a vivid journey through five movements, each depicting a different scene or character. From the eerie "Las Medusas en el Puerto" to the nostalgic "Old Man with Garage," and the communal spirit of "Todos al Padre" and "Los Tranvias," the suite culminates in the evocative title track, "The Lemon House."

The album concludes with Kalevi Aho's "Tuba Concerto," a three-movement work that highlights the tuba's lyrical and technical capabilities. The concerto begins with a serene "Andante," followed by a spirited "Allegro" featuring a dazzling cadenza. The final movement, "Larghetto," offers a contemplative conclusion to the album.

Performed by the talented tubist Øystein Baadsvik, the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, and conducted by Mats Rondin, this album is a testament to the collaborative artistry of these musicians. The recording, available in both stereo and multichannel SACD formats, captures the richness and depth of the performances, making it a standout addition to any classical music collection.
