      Album Details

Dive into the serene and introspective world of Charles Lloyd with his latest offering, "Trios: Ocean." Released on September 23, 2022, via Blue Note Records, this captivating album is the second installment in Lloyd's "Trio of Trios" series, a project that showcases the legendary saxophonist and composer in three distinct trio settings. Recorded in the historic Lobero Theater in Santa Barbara, California, "Trios: Ocean" captures the essence of Lloyd's free-spirited creativity and his enduring mastery of jazz.

At 84, Charles Lloyd continues to push the boundaries of his artistry, and "Trios: Ocean" is a testament to his enduring genius. The album features Lloyd on tenor saxophone and flute, accompanied by the virtuosic piano of Gerald Clayton and the evocative guitar of Anthony Wilson. Together, they weave a tapestry of sound that is both meditative and exhilarating, blending contemporary jazz with the rich traditions of the genre.

The album's four tracks, all performed live, offer a glimpse into the intimate and spontaneous nature of Lloyd's music. From the haunting melodies of "The Lonely One" to the blues-infused "Jaramillo Blues (For Virginia Jaramillo and Danny Johnson)," each piece is a masterclass in improvisation and musical conversation. "Hagar of the Inuits" and "Kuan Yin" further showcase Lloyd's ability to blend spiritual and cultural influences into his music, creating a sound that is uniquely his own.

"Trios: Ocean" is not just an album; it's an experience. The live setting adds an extra layer of energy and immediacy, making it feel as if the listener is right there in the room with the musicians. The interplay between Lloyd, Clayton, and Wilson is seamless, each musician responding to the others with a sensitivity and intuition that comes from years of collaboration.

For fans of Charles Lloyd and jazz enthusiasts alike, "Trios: Ocean" is a welcome addition to the canon of this legendary artist. It's a reminder of why Lloyd has been a towering figure in the world of jazz for over six decades, and a testament to his ongoing relevance and innovation. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to his music, "Trios: Ocean" is sure to captivate and inspire.
