      Album Details

Toshio Hosokawa's "Light and Darkness. Works for Saxophone" is a captivating exploration of contemporary experimental music, showcasing the composer's unique ability to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern Western classical techniques. Released on April 1, 2024, by the renowned label Kairos, this album is a testament to Hosokawa's innovative approach to composition.

Spanning a duration of 53 minutes, the album features nine tracks that highlight the versatility and expressiveness of the saxophone, performed by a stellar ensemble of musicians including Masanori Oishi, Mayumi Miyata, Ilse Eerens, and Naoko Yoshino. The compositions range from solo pieces to intricate chamber works, each offering a distinct sonic landscape that delves into the interplay between light and darkness, silence and sound.

The album opens with "Three Essays" (2016/2019), a trio of solo saxophone pieces that demonstrate Hosokawa's mastery of minimalism and his ability to evoke profound emotions with sparse, yet evocative, musical gestures. "Mei-An - Light and Darkness" (2020/2021) for shō and tenor saxophone is a standout track, blending the ethereal sounds of the traditional Japanese shō with the rich, resonant tones of the saxophone.

"Three Love Songs" (2006) for soprano and alto saxophone offers a more lyrical and introspective exploration of the saxophone's capabilities, while "Arc Song" (1999/2015) for soprano saxophone and harp creates a mesmerizing dialogue between the two instruments. The album concludes with "Vertical Time Study II" (1993/1994) for tenor saxophone, piano, and percussion, a complex and dynamic piece that showcases the full range of the saxophone's expressive potential.

Toshio Hosokawa's "Light and Darkness. Works for Saxophone" is a compelling addition to the repertoire of contemporary classical music, offering listeners a rich and immersive experience that highlights the beauty and depth of the saxophone. Whether you are a seasoned aficionado of experimental music or a curious newcomer, this album promises to be a rewarding and enlightening journey into the world of Toshio Hosokawa.
