      Album Details

In the heart of 1964, the Art Farmer Quartet, featuring the luminous guitar work of Jim Hall, ventured into the studios of Stockholm to craft a unique fusion of jazz and Swedish folk music. "To Sweden With Love" is a captivating journey through six tracks, each a testament to the quartet's virtuosity and their ability to blend diverse musical traditions.

The album opens with "Va da Du? (Was It You?)," a track that immediately sets the tone with its infectious rhythm and melodic charm. The quartet's mastery of hard bop and cool jazz is evident, as they navigate the intricate arrangements with ease. "De Salde Sina Hemman (They Sold Their Homestead)" follows, showcasing the band's dynamic interplay and the distinctive sound of Art Farmer's flugelhorn.

"Den Motstravige Brudgummen (The Reluctant Groom)" and "Och Hor Du Unga Dora (And Listen Young Dora)" continue the exploration of Swedish folk themes, with the quartet's jazz sensibilities adding a fresh perspective to these traditional tunes. The title track, "Kristallen Den Fina (The Fine Crystal)," is a standout, highlighting the exquisite chemistry between Farmer and Hall.

The album concludes with "Visa Vid Midsommartid (Midsummer Song)," a fitting finale that encapsulates the spirit of the entire recording. With a duration of just over 32 minutes, "To Sweden With Love" is a concise yet powerful statement from one of jazz's most innovative quartets. Recorded with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Pete La Roca, this album is a testament to the quartet's inventive approach and their ability to rise to the challenge of playing a program of Swedish folk music with jazz sensibilities.
