Born in Newport News, Virginia, in 1918, Bailey began her career singing in her father's church choir at the tender age of three. She honed her skills in vaudeville before making her Broadway debut in "St. Louis Woman" in 1946. Bailey's career soared with her iconic role in the all-black production of "Hello, Dolly!" in 1968, for which she received a Special Tony Award.
