      Album Details

Charles Lloyd's "The Water Is Wide," released in August 2000 on ECM Records, is a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of jazz, blending the wisdom of seasoned musicians with the vitality of younger talents. Recorded in December 1999 at Cello Studios in Los Angeles, this album is a testament to Lloyd's enduring mastery of the saxophone and his ability to inspire those around him. With a runtime of just over an hour, the twelve-track collection spans a variety of styles within the jazz genre, from neo-bop to contemporary jazz, showcasing Lloyd's versatility and depth.

The album features a mix of original compositions and reinterpretations, each track offering a unique perspective on the jazz tradition. Standout pieces like "Georgia" and "Black Butterfly" highlight Lloyd's lyrical prowess, while tracks such as "Ballade And Allegro" and "Figure In Blue" demonstrate his technical skill and innovative approach. The inclusion of spirituals like "There Is A Balm In Gilead" and "Prayer" adds a layer of depth, reflecting Lloyd's spiritual journey and his commitment to social justice.

"The Water Is Wide" is the first of two albums drawn from an exceptionally productive session, showcasing Lloyd's ability to connect with both old masters and young lions in the jazz world. The album's blend of classic and contemporary elements makes it a timeless addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection, offering a rich and rewarding listening experience.
