      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of John Ireland's songwriting with "The Songs of John Ireland," a comprehensive collection that showcases the composer's mastery of the art song. Released in 1999 on the prestigious Hyperion label, this two-disc set spans nearly two and a half hours, featuring 69 tracks that encapsulate Ireland's unique blend of Romantic and post-Romantic influences.

John Ireland, a conservative British composer, drew inspiration from the likes of Beethoven and Brahms, weaving together a style that is both nostalgic and forward-looking. His compositions, rich in lyricism, incorporate elements of Impressionism and Neo-Classicism, creating a sound that is distinctly his own. This album offers a deep dive into his songwriting prowess, featuring works that range from sacred and profane themes to poignant settings of poems by Thomas Hardy.

The album boasts an impressive lineup of performers, including Lisa Milne, John Mark Ainsley, and Christopher Maltman, each bringing their unique interpretations to Ireland's compositions. Accompanied by the skilled pianism of Graham Johnson, the performances are both nuanced and powerful, highlighting the depth and breadth of Ireland's musical vision.

"The Songs of John Ireland" is not just a collection of songs; it is a journey through the composer's artistic evolution. From his early works to his more mature compositions, the album provides a comprehensive overview of Ireland's songwriting career. Whether you are a seasoned fan of classical music or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.
