      Album Details

"The Ed Blackwell Project Vol. II - What It Be Like?" is a captivating exploration into the world of free jazz and avant-garde music, led by the legendary drummer Ed Blackwell. Recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, California in August 1992, this album is a testament to Blackwell's innovative spirit and his ability to push the boundaries of jazz.

Joined by saxophonist Carlos Ward, bassist Mark Helias, and cornetist Graham Haynes, Blackwell delivers a powerful and dynamic performance that spans six tracks. The album opens with "Nebula," a sprawling, atmospheric piece that sets the stage for the adventurous journey ahead. "Grandma's Shoes" and "Pentahouve" showcase Blackwell's signature rhythmic complexity and the band's tight, telepathic interplay. The album also includes a tribute to Thelonious Monk, "First Love - For Thelonious Monk," and the three-part suite "Lito," which highlights the band's collective improvisational prowess.

With a runtime of just over an hour, "What It Be Like?" is a deep dive into the creative mind of Ed Blackwell and his collaborators. The album's free-form structure and exploratory nature make it a standout in the world of avant-garde jazz, offering a unique listening experience that rewards repeated plays. Whether you're a longtime fan of Ed Blackwell or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to impress with its boldness, creativity, and sheer musicality.
