The Cusp of Magic - Terry Riley

      Album Details

Terry Riley's "The Cusp of Magic" is a captivating six-movement piece that showcases his signature minimalist style, blending avant-garde, experimental, drone, and ambient elements. Released in 2008 on the Nonesuch label, this album-length collaboration between the renowned Kronos Quartet and the virtuoso pipa player Wu Man offers a unique and immersive listening experience.

Commissioned by the Kronos Quartet for Terry Riley's 70th birthday in 2005, "The Cusp of Magic" is a testament to Riley's enduring influence on contemporary classical music. The album begins and ends with the spirit of Native American peyote rituals, incorporating elements from these all-night ceremonies of prayer, songs, and meditation. This spiritual foundation is woven throughout the piece, creating a sense of continuity and depth.

The six movements, including tracks like "Buddha's Bedroom," "The Nursery," and "Royal Wedding," explore a range of moods and textures. The use of the pipa, a traditional Chinese string instrument, adds a distinctive and evocative layer to the quartet's rich sound. The outer movements, "The Cusp of Magic" and "Prayer Circle," feature irregular rhythms inspired by the peyote ritual, providing a dynamic counterpoint to the more meditative passages.

With a duration of just over 51 minutes, "The Cusp of Magic" is a compelling journey through Riley's imaginative soundscapes. Whether you're a longtime fan of minimalist music or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding exploration of Terry Riley's unique artistic vision.
