      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical music with Nathan Milstein's exquisite album, "Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto / Encores." This 2007 release on the Naxos label is a masterful blend of Tchaikovsky's iconic Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35, and a delightful assortment of encores that showcase Milstein's virtuosity and versatility. The album spans a rich tapestry of genres, from chamber music to lyrical songs, all rendered with Milstein's distinctive touch.

The centerpiece of the album is Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, a work that demands both technical brilliance and profound emotional depth. Milstein's performance is nothing short of transcendent, capturing the concerto's soaring melodies and intricate passages with precision and passion. The three movements of the concerto—Allegro moderato, Canzonetta. Andante, and Finale. Allegro vivacissimo—are each a testament to Milstein's artistry.

Beyond the concerto, the album offers a diverse collection of encores, including arrangements of songs and pieces that highlight Milstein's ability to convey a wide range of moods and styles. From the ethereal beauty of "Après un rêve" to the playful charm of "Poupée valsante (Dancing Doll)," each piece is a gem in its own right. The album also features arrangements of well-known works like "Old Folks at Home" and "Ellens Gesang III (Ave Maria!)," showcasing Milstein's knack for making familiar tunes feel fresh and new.

With a duration of just over an hour and ten minutes, this album is a concise yet comprehensive exploration of Milstein's musical prowess. Whether you're a longtime admirer of classical music or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, Nathan Milstein's "Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto / Encores" is a captivating listen that highlights the enduring appeal of these timeless compositions.

      About Nathan Milstein

Nathan Milstein, born in Odessa in 1904, was a virtuoso violinist whose career spanned over six decades, leaving an indelible mark on the classical music world. Known for his silken tone, superb technique, and stylish phrasing, Milstein was particularly celebrated for his interpretations of J.S. Bach's unaccompanied violin sonatas and works from the Romantic repertoire. His career began under the tutelage of the renowned Leopold Auer in St. Petersburg and flourished after he left Russia in 1925, touring Europe with his friend Vladimir Horowitz. Milstein's recordings, which include masterful performances of concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and Bruch, are testament to his ceaseless search for fresh interpretations and his seemingly inexhaustible reservoir of fingerings. His humanity and purity of playing set him apart, earning him the title of "probably the most nearly perfect violinist of his age" by Harold C. Schonberg of the New York Times. Milstein's legacy endures through his extensive discography and the enduring influence of his artistry on generations of violinists.
