      Album Details

Emil Gilels, the renowned pianist, teams up with violinist Leonid Kogan and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich to deliver a captivating performance of two monumental works in the chamber music repertoire. This album, released on February 13, 2014, under the RHI label, presents a compelling blend of Tchaikovsky's and Shostakovich's piano trios, offering a rich and diverse listening experience.

The album opens with Tchaikovsky's "Patetica" Piano Trio in A Minor, Op. 50, a deeply expressive and introspective work. The first movement, "Pezzo elegiaco," sets a somber and reflective tone, while the second movement, "Tema con variazioni - Variazioni finale e coda," showcases the trio's technical prowess and musical sensitivity. The performance is marked by a profound understanding of the composer's emotional landscape, with Gilels, Kogan, and Rostropovich bringing out the nuances and depth of Tchaikovsky's writing.

The second half of the album features Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 67, a work that reflects the composer's personal and political struggles. The four-movement trio begins with an "Andante moderato - Poco più mosso," followed by a lively "Allegro con brio." The "Largo" movement offers a moment of introspection and melancholy, while the final "Allegretto - Adagio" brings the work to a powerful and poignant conclusion. The trio's performance is characterized by its precision, intensity, and emotional resonance, capturing the essence of Shostakovich's complex and evocative music.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 12 minutes, this album is a testament to the enduring power of these two masterpieces and the exceptional artistry of Emil Gilels, Leonid Kogan, and Mstislav Rostropovich. Their collaboration results in a performance that is both technically impressive and deeply moving, offering listeners a profound and unforgettable musical experience.
