      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical music with Julius Katchen's captivating album, featuring a stunning blend of Tchaikovsky's orchestral masterpieces and Rachmaninoff's virtuosic piano concerto. This album, released on January 1, 2015, under the Ginkgo Classical label, showcases Katchen's exceptional artistry and the London Symphony Orchestra's impeccable precision under the baton of Sir Georg Solti and Kenneth Alwyn.

The album opens with Tchaikovsky's iconic "1812 Overture, Op. 49," a thrilling composition that celebrates Russia's defense against Napoleon's invading army. Following this, the enchanting "Capriccio italien, Op. 45" transports you to the vibrant streets of Italy, filled with lively dances and folk melodies. The powerful "Slavonic March, Op. 31" completes the Tchaikovsky trio, evoking a sense of national pride and resilience.

The second half of the album is dedicated to Rachmaninoff's "Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18," a monumental work that highlights Katchen's technical brilliance and emotional depth. The concerto is divided into three movements: the introspective "Moderato," the lyrical "Adagio sostenuto," and the spirited "Allegro scherzando." Each movement is a testament to Rachmaninoff's compositional genius and Katchen's interpretive prowess.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 12 minutes, this album is a treasure trove of classical music that will captivate both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Julius Katchen's masterful performances, combined with the London Symphony Orchestra's rich sound, create an unforgettable listening experience that transcends time and space.
