      Album Details

Dive into the rich musical landscape of Sergei Taneyev with this captivating album, featuring two of his most significant works. The album opens with "Ioann Damaskin (John of Damascus)," Op. 1, a cantata inspired by a poem from Aleksey Tolstoy. This piece marks a pivotal moment in Taneyev's career, as it was the first work he considered worthy of an opus number. The cantata is a profound exploration of faith and spirituality, showcasing Taneyev's mastery of vocal and orchestral writing.

The second half of the album is dedicated to Taneyev's "Suite de Concert," Op. 28, a brilliant display of his compositional prowess. This five-movement suite begins with a somber "Prelude" and culminates in a lively "Tarantella," with a standout "Theme and Variations" movement that offers a diverse range of moods and tempos. The suite is a testament to Taneyev's ability to blend classical forms with a distinctly Russian voice.

Recorded by the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Thomas Sanderling, with Ilya Kaler on violin and the Gnesin Academy Chorus providing vocal support, this album offers a comprehensive introduction to Taneyev's unique musical language. The performances are impeccable, bringing out the depth and nuance of Taneyev's scores. Whether you're a fan of Russian music or simply appreciate beautifully crafted compositions, this album is sure to delight. With a running time of just over an hour, it's an excellent way to spend time with one of the most important Russian composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

      About Sergei Taneyev

Sergei Taneyev, a towering figure in Russian music, was a multifaceted genius as a composer, pianist, and educator. Born in 1856, Taneyev's works are renowned for their intricate contrapuntal textures and romantic sensibilities. He began his illustrious career at the age of 22, joining the faculty of the Moscow Conservatory, where he taught composition, counterpoint, piano, and musical form. Taneyev's compositions, such as his final orchestral work, the Concert Suite for Violin and Orchestra, showcase his mastery of craft and deep musical erudition. Described by Rachmaninoff as "a master composer and the most erudite musician of his time," Taneyev's influence extended far beyond his compositions, shaping generations of musicians as one of Russia's greatest teachers. His boldness and innovation, evident from his early performances of Brahms, cemented his legacy as a pioneer in Russian music.
