      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, classical compositions of Sergei Taneyev with this captivating album released on June 30, 2009, under the Naxos label. Spanning a duration of 1 hour and 14 minutes, this collection showcases Taneyev's mastery of orchestral and choral works, offering a profound exploration of his musical genius.

The album opens with the dramatic "Overture to Oresteya, Op. 6," setting the stage for a journey through Taneyev's intricate and evocative compositions. The "Oresteya, Act III: Entr'acte: The Temple of Apollo at Delphi" provides a serene contrast, highlighting Taneyev's ability to convey a wide range of emotions through his music. The "Adagio in C Major" is a testament to his skill in crafting deeply moving melodies, while the "Overture on a Russian theme" infuses traditional Russian elements into a symphonic context.

One of the standout pieces is the "Cantata for the Unveiling of the Moscow Pushkin Memorial," featuring the powerful vocal performance of "Ya pamyatnik sebe vozdvig nerukotvorniy" (I Have Built myself a Monument not Made by Hands). This cantata is a celebration of Pushkin's legacy and showcases Taneyev's ability to blend choral and orchestral elements seamlessly.

The album concludes with the "Overture in D Minor," a piece that Taneyev composed at the young age of 19. This early work demonstrates his precocious talent and sets the tone for the rest of his illustrious career. Conducted by Thomas Sanderling and performed by the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra, this album is a testament to the enduring appeal of Taneyev's music. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rewarding listening experience that highlights the depth and breadth of Taneyev's musical contributions.

      About Sergei Taneyev

Sergei Taneyev, a towering figure in Russian music, was a multifaceted genius as a composer, pianist, and educator. Born in 1856, Taneyev's works are renowned for their intricate contrapuntal textures and romantic sensibilities. He began his illustrious career at the age of 22, joining the faculty of the Moscow Conservatory, where he taught composition, counterpoint, piano, and musical form. Taneyev's compositions, such as his final orchestral work, the Concert Suite for Violin and Orchestra, showcase his mastery of craft and deep musical erudition. Described by Rachmaninoff as "a master composer and the most erudite musician of his time," Taneyev's influence extended far beyond his compositions, shaping generations of musicians as one of Russia's greatest teachers. His boldness and innovation, evident from his early performances of Brahms, cemented his legacy as a pioneer in Russian music.
