      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the serene and evocative world of Toru Takemitsu with this captivating collection of Japanese classical compositions. Released in 2003, this album brings together four of Takemitsu's most renowned works, each offering a unique auditory experience that showcases his mastery of sound and composition.

The album opens with "And Then I Knew 'Twas Wind," a piece that gently introduces the listener to Takemitsu's delicate and introspective style. Following this is "Rain Tree," a composition that beautifully captures the essence of nature through its intricate and soothing melodies. The three-part suite "Toward the Sea" is a highlight of the album, with each movement—"I - The Night," "II - Moby Dick," and "III - Cape Cod"—offering a distinct yet harmonious exploration of maritime themes.

"Bryce" adds a touch of mystery and depth, while "Itinerant" and "Voice" continue the album's journey through Takemitsu's rich musical landscape. The album concludes with "Rain Spell," a piece that ties the collection together with its enchanting and reflective tones.

Performed by the Toronto New Music Ensemble under the direction of Robert Aitken, this album is a testament to Takemitsu's enduring influence and the timeless beauty of his compositions. With a duration of just over an hour, it's an ideal choice for those seeking a moment of tranquility and artistic inspiration.

      About Toru Takemitsu

Toru Takemitsu, a pioneering figure in Japanese classical music, is renowned for his unique ability to blend Eastern and Western musical traditions. Born in Tokyo, Takemitsu was largely self-taught, developing a distinctive style that subtly manipulates instrumental and orchestral timbre. His compositions, which often fuse sound with silence and tradition with innovation, have earned him global acclaim, making him the first East Asian composer to achieve worldwide recognition. Takemitsu's extensive body of work includes several hundred independent pieces, film scores for over ninety movies, and twenty published books on aesthetics and music theory. His musical journey began at the age of 16, inspired by Western music heard through radio broadcasts during the post-war 1940s. Takemitsu's influence extends beyond his compositions, as he was also a founding member of the experimental music group Jikken Kobo. His works continue to be celebrated and performed by orchestras worldwide, showcasing his enduring impact on the music world.
