      Album Details

Dive into the enchanting world of Toru Takemitsu's "Takemitsu: Requiem; Family Tree; My Way Of Life," a captivating journey through the realms of Japanese classical music. Released on November 4, 1997, this album is a testament to Takemitsu's unique compositional voice, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary classical techniques.

The album opens with "Ceremonial - An Autumn Ode," setting a serene and reflective tone that permeates the entire collection. The standout piece, "Family Tree," is a series of musical verses for young people, each movement dedicated to a different family member, offering a poignant exploration of familial bonds and memories.

"Family Tree" is followed by "My Way of Life," a deeply introspective work set to poems by Ryuichi Tamura. This suite meditates on life, death, and the passage of time, with the enduring symbol of trees representing the longevity of nature—a theme close to Takemitsu's heart. The album also features the hauntingly beautiful "Requiem pour orchestre à cordes," a piece that showcases Takemitsu's mastery of orchestration and his ability to evoke profound emotions through music.

Conducted by the esteemed Seiji Ozawa and performed by the Saito Kinen Orchestra, along with notable soloists like Dwayne Croft and Mayumi Miyuta, this album is a collaboration of exceptional talent. The performances are impeccable, bringing out the nuances and depth of Takemitsu's compositions.

"Takemitsu: Requiem; Family Tree; My Way Of Life" is a profound exploration of life's cycles and the enduring power of nature, all wrapped in the rich tapestry of Japanese classical music. Whether you're a seasoned classical enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

      About Toru Takemitsu

Toru Takemitsu, a pioneering figure in Japanese classical music, is renowned for his unique ability to blend Eastern and Western musical traditions. Born in Tokyo, Takemitsu was largely self-taught, developing a distinctive style that subtly manipulates instrumental and orchestral timbre. His compositions, which often fuse sound with silence and tradition with innovation, have earned him global acclaim, making him the first East Asian composer to achieve worldwide recognition. Takemitsu's extensive body of work includes several hundred independent pieces, film scores for over ninety movies, and twenty published books on aesthetics and music theory. His musical journey began at the age of 16, inspired by Western music heard through radio broadcasts during the post-war 1940s. Takemitsu's influence extends beyond his compositions, as he was also a founding member of the experimental music group Jikken Kobo. His works continue to be celebrated and performed by orchestras worldwide, showcasing his enduring impact on the music world.
