      Album Details

Dive into the enchanting world of 19th-century opera with Franz von Suppé's "Il ritorno del marinaio," a captivating romantic opera that showcases the composer's mastery of melody and drama. This two-act opera, originally written in German as "Des Matrosen Heimkehr," is presented here in a stunning Italian translation, offering a fresh perspective on Suppé's timeless work.

Composed by the Dalmatian maestro Franz von Suppé, this opera is a testament to his enduring legacy in the world of classical music. With a libretto by Anton Langer, the opera unfolds over 25 tracks, spanning a total of 1 hour and 26 minutes. Each track is a gem in itself, from the stirring prelude to the lively galoppade and the dramatic ensembles.

Released on November 3, 2017, by the esteemed label CPO, this album is a treasure trove for opera enthusiasts and classical music lovers alike. The opera is divided into two acts, each filled with a rich tapestry of arias, duets, and choruses that bring the story of a sailor's return to life. Highlights include the ballet "Ballabile die Mozzi," the poignant aria "Degli anni miei sul verde april," and the dramatic ensemble "Alto! Fermi là!"

This recording, featuring a stellar cast and orchestra, brings Suppé's vision to life with vivid detail and musical brilliance. Whether you are a seasoned opera aficionado or a curious newcomer, this album promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of romantic opera.

      About Franz von Suppé

Franz von Suppé, born Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo de Suppé in 1819, is celebrated as the creator of the Viennese operetta. Born in Split, Dalmatien (now Croatia), Suppé's musical journey began despite his initial studies in law, as his father wished. His prolific career spanned over two centuries, leaving behind more than 200 stage works, predominantly operettas. Suppé's compositions, including the renowned overtures to "Dichter und Bauer" and "Leichte Kavallerie," have solidified his status as one of the most significant operetta composers, standing alongside giants like Jacques Offenbach, Johann Strauss, and Karl Millöcker. His first operetta, "Das Pensionat," premiered in 1860, marking the beginning of a genre that would define his legacy. Suppé's contributions to the world of music continue to enchant audiences worldwide.
