      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Franz von Suppé's "Die schöne Galathée," a delightful operetta that has captivated audiences since its premiere in 1865. This 2001 recording, brought to life by the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie under the baton of conductor Ola Rudner, offers a fresh and vibrant interpretation of Suppé's most enduring one-act success.

The album features a stellar cast, including tenor Hans-Jürg Rickenbacher and baritone Michael Kupfer, who bring depth and charm to their respective roles. The operetta, a komisch-mythologische Oper in einem Akt, is a whimsical blend of comedy and mythology, set to Suppé's irresistible melodies and witty dialogue.

The recording begins with the lively overture, setting the stage for a series of enchanting arias and duets. Highlights include "Aurora ist erwacht im Strahlenschein," a radiant morning song, and "Ach, mich zieht's zu dir," a tender love duet. The album concludes with "Venus! Lass sie werden, was sie war," a playful invocation to the goddess of love.

With a duration of 48 minutes, this album is a perfect introduction to the world of Franz von Suppé, a composer known for his light-hearted operettas and lively orchestral works. The recording, released on the CPO label, is a testament to Suppé's enduring appeal and the timeless charm of "Die schöne Galathée." Whether you're a seasoned operetta enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to delight and entertain.

      About Franz von Suppé

Franz von Suppé, born Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo de Suppé in 1819, is celebrated as the creator of the Viennese operetta. Born in Split, Dalmatien (now Croatia), Suppé's musical journey began despite his initial studies in law, as his father wished. His prolific career spanned over two centuries, leaving behind more than 200 stage works, predominantly operettas. Suppé's compositions, including the renowned overtures to "Dichter und Bauer" and "Leichte Kavallerie," have solidified his status as one of the most significant operetta composers, standing alongside giants like Jacques Offenbach, Johann Strauss, and Karl Millöcker. His first operetta, "Das Pensionat," premiered in 1860, marking the beginning of a genre that would define his legacy. Suppé's contributions to the world of music continue to enchant audiences worldwide.
