      Album Details

Dive into the profound and evocative world of Isang Yun with "Sunrise Falling," a monumental collection released in 2018 to commemorate the centennial of the renowned Korean composer's birth. This album, spanning over two hours, is a testament to Yun's enduring legacy and his unique musical voice, forged through a life marked by both adversity and artistic triumph.

"Sunrise Falling" features a rich tapestry of works, including the powerful Cello Concerto and the dynamic Violin Concerto No. 1, both performed with stunning virtuosity. The album also showcases Yun's innovative compositions like "Glissées" and "Kontraste," each piece a testament to his ability to blend traditional Korean elements with contemporary classical techniques.

Performances are led by the esteemed conductor Dennis Russell Davies, with soloists Matt Haimovitz on cello and Yumi Hwang-Williams on violin, accompanied by the Bruckner Orchester Linz. Their interpretations bring depth and nuance to Yun's compositions, highlighting the composer's raw emotional power and intricate musical language.

This album is not just a celebration of Isang Yun's centennial but also a deep exploration of his enduring influence on the world of classical music. Whether you are a longtime admirer of Yun's work or a newcomer to his compositions, "Sunrise Falling" offers an unforgettable journey through the mind and heart of one of the 20th century's most compelling composers.

      About Isang Yun

Isang Yun, born Yun I-sang, was a pioneering composer who bridged the musical traditions of East and West with remarkable finesse. Born in Tongyong, Korea, in 1917, Yun's early life was marked by his active resistance against the Japanese occupation. His musical journey took him to Japan and Korea for his studies, but it was in West Germany that he forged his later career, becoming the first composer from Eastern Asia to establish an international presence there.

Yun's compositions are a unique fusion of Asian philosophy, aesthetics, and musical styles with Western avant-garde techniques. His work is not just a blend but a synthesis, creating a distinct sound that is both familiar and innovative. Throughout his career, Yun was uncompromising in his artistic vision and his personal beliefs, holding fast to his dream of a united Korea. His influence extended beyond his music, encouraging contemporary music scenes in both North and South Korea.

Yun's legacy continues to inspire, commemorated through events like the ISANGYUN Competition in his birthplace of Tongyeong. His compositions invite listeners to explore the depths of his artistic vision, making him a seminal figure in the world of contemporary classical music.
