      Summertime - Isata Kanneh-Mason

      Album Details

Isata Kanneh-Mason's "Summertime" is a captivating exploration of 20th-century American music, showcasing the pianist's remarkable talent and versatility. Released on July 9, 2021, via Decca Music Group Ltd., this album is a testament to Kanneh-Mason's ability to breathe new life into both well-known and lesser-explored pieces. The album opens with Earl Wild's virtuosic "Grand Fantasy on Porgy and Bess: Summertime," a joyful and energetic transcription of Gershwin's famous melody. This sets the tone for the rest of the album, which features a diverse range of styles and influences.

Kanneh-Mason's technical prowess is on full display in her rendition of Samuel Barber's monumental Piano Sonata in E-Flat Minor, Op. 26. This four-movement work is a tour de force, drawing on 20th-century European modernism while maintaining a distinctly American voice. The album also includes a world premiere recording of a piece by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, highlighting Kanneh-Mason's commitment to bringing lesser-known works to a wider audience.

In addition to these substantial works, the album features a selection of shorter pieces that showcase Kanneh-Mason's interpretive skills. From the spirituals "Deep River" and "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" to the virtuosic "7 Virtuoso Etudes" by Earl Wild, each piece is imbued with a sense of warmth and intimacy. The album was recorded at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall, with excellent sound engineering that amplifies Kanneh-Mason's warm tone and dynamic range.

"Summertime" is not just a collection of beautiful performances; it's a journey through the musical landscape of 20th-century America. Kanneh-Mason's signature flair and technical brilliance shine through in every note, making this album a standout in her discography. Whether you're a fan of classical music or simply appreciate beautiful piano playing, "Summertime" is sure to delight.
