      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Sir Arthur Sullivan's "Ivanhoe," a romantic opera that brings to life the timeless tale of Sir Walter Scott's 1819 novel. Composed by the renowned Arthur Sullivan, this grand opera is a testament to his musical genius and features a libretto by Julian Sturgis. Released in 2010 by Chandos, this opera spans three acts and offers a rich, 2 hour and 45 minute journey through medieval England.

"Ivanhoe" is Sullivan's only grand opera, and it's a masterpiece that showcases his ability to blend dramatic storytelling with lush, evocative music. The opera follows the adventures of Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe, a disinherited knight who returns to England after the Third Crusade, and his quest for justice and love. With a cast of memorable characters, including the noble Rebecca, the cunning Prince John, and the heroic King Richard the Lionheart, the opera is a rich tapestry of intrigue, romance, and adventure.

The 2010 recording features the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by David Lloyd-Jones, with a stellar cast that includes Neal Davies as Richard Coeur-de-Lion, Stephen Gadd, and James Rutherford. The opera's 46 tracks are filled with memorable arias, choruses, and ensembles that highlight Sullivan's exceptional talent for melody and harmony. From the stirring battle scenes to the tender love duets, "Ivanhoe" is a feast for the ears and the imagination.

This recording is not just a performance; it's a historical document that captures the essence of Sullivan's vision. The booklet includes a detailed essay by Martin T. Yates, providing context and insights into the opera's creation and reception. Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "Ivanhoe" offers a compelling and enjoyable listening experience that showcases the best of Arthur Sullivan's musical legacy.

      About Arthur Sullivan

Arthur Sullivan, born in London in 1842, was a prolific English composer whose name is synonymous with the golden age of Victorian comic opera. His most enduring legacy is his collaboration with the librettist W. S. Gilbert, with whom he created a series of wildly popular and enduring Savoy Operas, including "H.M.S. Pinafore," "The Pirates of Penzance," and "The Mikado." These works, known for their wit, satire, and memorable tunes, remain staples of the operatic repertoire and have been performed and enjoyed by audiences worldwide. Beyond his operatic collaborations, Sullivan's compositions span a wide range of genres, including symphonies, concertos, choral works, hymns, and songs. His hymns, such as "Onward, Christian Soldiers," have become beloved standards in churches and concert halls alike. Sullivan's musical style, characterized by its lyrical melodies and inventive harmonies, reflects his deep understanding of both classical and popular music traditions. His contributions to music have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape, and his works continue to captivate and inspire audiences today.
